What is the M&D Pre-Med® Programme?
The M&D Pre-Med® is a unique 1-year programme taught in central London on the campuses of Birkbeck College, University of London and Albion College. It is validated by the University of Buckingham, awarding successful graduates of this course a Certificate of Higher Education (CertHE.) in Medical Science qualification. The M&D Pre-Med® has been developed for students who have been unsuccessful at getting an offer to medical/dental school, students who want to increase their chances of getting an offer, and students who want a variety of opportunities to follow their dream of studying medicine or dentistry.

Key Benefits
Taught over one academic year (September-June), this programme is designed for students who have completed A-Levels (or an equivalent) but may not have secured a place at medical or dental school on their first attempt.
- It gives students an alternative route to medical and dental school that actually increases their chances of gaining a place.
- The focus is on UCAS applications. After completing UKCAT and/or BMAT, students have the opportunity to re-apply for UK medical or dental schools within the first few weeks of the programme with the support and guidance of our highly experienced advisors.
- Core modules are taught from a clinical perspective which provides students with the theory and experience found among first year courses at medical or dental school. This includes an introduction to medicine in practice by participating in patient simulation at Barts and The London Simulation Centre, delivering excellent preparation and insight into medical diagnoses and treatment.
The systems-based structure and incorporation of patient simulation and clinical teaching highlights the medical approach of this course, encouraging students to learn in a health-orientated manner.
Course Highlights
- Cellular Biology offers students the ability to learn about different types of cells and their features and connect these to disease processes.
- Neuroscience provides students with an understanding of the nervous system and bodily responses.
- Organic Chemistryhelps students become familiar with the structure and function of key organic molecules.
- Endocrine and Reproductive System offers students an introduction to the action of various hormones in relation to the endocrine and reproduction systems set of positive and negative feedback mechanisms.
- Circulatory and Respiratory System delivers a study of the anatomy and function of these systems also in terms of related pathologies that may occur when not functioning.
- Musculoskeletal System provides students with an understanding of the movement of the human body through the aid of dissection videos and theoretical study.
- Gastrointestinal System teaches students about the GI tract and how it functions as well as offers insight into various pathologies.
- Renal System teaches students about the exocrine and endocrine functions of the kidney as well as some common pathologies about the renal system and their impact on the body.
- Clinical Simulation & Ethics focuses on ethics and its central role in the field of biological and human research as well as medical science and patient care. This is usually carried out in association with Barts and The London Simulation Centre.
The course offers students a strong understanding of medical science taught at the first year of university degree level. Taught to a strong foundation of theoretical knowledge and real-world application through a range of teaching methodologies, such as lectures, small group tutorial sessions, one-to-one personal tutoring, seminars, practicals and personal assessments. Here are some of the course highlights:
Measurable Results
- On completion of the course, students can obtain a CertHE. in Medical Sciences (120 credits) awarded by the University of Buckingham. This can potentially be used to transfer into the second year of a BSc. degree at a UK university.
- Students can access UK medical/dental school via a UCAS application made at the start of the programme.
- The top 50% of students who pass the programme are given preference and are guaranteed an interview for the five-year dental degree course at the prestigious Cardenal Herrera University, Spain. In special cases, the highest achievers may also be transferred to second year of the dentistry programme. The same opportunity applies for a six-year medical degree.
- There are places for students at medical schools in the Caribbean. For example, St Matthews University offers placement to students who pass the programme and meet other non-academic criteria, such as visas and health checks (See page 19 for further information).
- Preferential preparation for places is also offered at medical and dental schools in Eastern Europe, including Hungary, Poland, Czech Republic and Slovakia.
